The German 18B visa is a type of work visa for foreign nationals who hold a university degree recognized in Germany. It allows them to work in professional positions that match their qualifications. This visa is part of Germany’s policy to attract highly qualified workers in order to address the shortage of skilled labor.
Who can apply for the German 18B visa?
To be eligible for the German 18B visa in 2025, applicants must meet the following requirements:
1. A university degree recognized in Germany
Your degree must be recognized as equivalent to a German university degree. You can check the recognition status through the ANABIN database or via the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB).
2. A concrete job offer from a German employer
You must have a valid employment contract or official job offer from a company in Germany. The position must correspond to your academic qualifications.
3. Minimum salary requirement
The gross annual salary must be at least EUR 48,300.
For shortage occupations or for graduates within the first three years after completing their studies, the minimum annual salary is EUR 43,759.80.
4. German language proficiency
Although not mandatory for all professions, having a German language certificate significantly increases the chances of visa approval. For state-regulated professions (such as healthcare), a specific level of German language proficiency is required.
5. Applicants aged 45 and above
Applicants aged 45 or older must demonstrate either a minimum gross annual salary of EUR 48,180 or proof of adequate pension provisions to ensure financial security in old age.
